The book teaches the reader how to describe and explain things in an abstract and memorable style.
The book could be used in a psych or sociology class because of it being about crazy people in the asylum. It wouldn't teach much other than insight on the life and thoughts of people in an asylum.
It teaches how to write a creative and unique story.
